When talking with a patient after surgery I noticed some of her depression and anxiety. We were able to introduce mechanisms to help her cope such as adapting her dietary habits, taking prescribed medicines, relaxation techniques and I also encouraged her to call me whenever she needed to talk. The patient told me that just knowing she had someone to talk with who would answer the phone and listen without judgment was wonderful. She even began referring to me as her “life line.” She called me daily for a while and would voice her concerns and problems and I would listen, reassure and counsel her. During this time I was also able to help with her referrals and other treatment items which also helped put her mind at ease.
Since then the patient has fully recovered from her surgery, is exercising, maintaining her diet, taking her medications as prescribed and has a great approach to total health. And when she needs to, she still calls!
